Product Care Guide

This Product Care Guide contains some essential advice to extend the life of your Boston Harbour jacket for as long as possible, while respecting the environment at the same time.

Leathers Protection & Care

Protecting Leather:

  • Use a high-quality water and stain repellent product to help prevent water stains. Leather cleaning formula should be free of silicone and wax or ingredients that break down the natural oils in leather. Apply every two or three months with regular use.

  • Use a high quality leather lotion on a soft cloth to moisturize finished leather. We recommend specially formulated leather products with lanolin oils to replenish natural oils and protect all fine, smooth and grained leather. Avoid using lotions on suede or buffed leather (leather that has a nap), instead use product made for suede leather protection.

  • Avoid using cleaning fluid, shoe cream, saddle soap and mink oil. These products contain ingredients that may damage leather.

  • We recommend that you test any leather protection and leather cleaning products on a hidden area of the leather.

  • Don't keep heavy objects, such as key chains, in your pockets. Doing so will stretch the leather. Avoid applying hair sprays and perfumes while wearing leather.

  • Don't attach pins, adhesive badges or tape to leather, as it will damage the leather.

  • Repair hems with a small amount of rubber cement.

Cleaning Leather:

  • Use only leather cleaning products to clean leather or suede and gently blot liquid stains with a clean cloth.

  • When winter salt stains your leather, wipe with a clean, damp cloth of leather care wipes and dry naturally.

  • Visit a professional leather cleaner for more serious stains. Normal dry cleaning methods will remove essential oils, causing the leather to crack, fade and shrink. A cleaner who specializes in leather care will use different methods to clean and condition the leather. Even the special process may case slight variations in color, texture, and shape; so it is important to clean matching garments together.

Leather Care When Wet:

  • lf your leather becomes wet, allow it to dry at room temperature. (Never put leather in the dryer.) Then apply leather and suede protector. Buff suede with a soft towel to restore the nap.

  • If your garment has faux-fur trim and the fur gets wet, dry it with a hair dryer set on the lowest temperature. Shake fur during the drying process, and periodically during wear to maintain loft and maximize appearance.

Suede & Leather Storage:

  • Store your leather coat or jacket on a wide wooden, plastic or padded hanger to help maintain its shape.

  • Store leather in a well-ventilated, cool, dry place. Avoid hot areas, such as attics; or damp areas, such as cellars.

  • Cover your leather with breathable cloth, like a cotton sheet, when storing. Plastic bags or coverings will cause excessive drying.

  • Wrinkles and creases in leather should hang out. If ironing is necessary, place heavy brown paper over the leather and use a cool to medium iron. Take care not to overheat the leather, which will cause it to shine.

  • Avoid exposing leather to direct sunlight or heat for prolonged periods of time.

Textiles Protection & Care

Protecting Textile:

  • Think twice before washing your jacket to save the environment. Often all you need to do to regain that fresh feeling is hang it to air outside.

  • Individual stains do not mean that the whole jacket is dirty and needs to be washed. Stains can easily be removed manually with an ecological stain remover without any fragrance or lotion.

  • Dust and superficial dirt can be removed with a brush or a damp cloth.

  • It is always important to read and follow the care label inside the garment.

Cleaning Textile:

  • Rub it onto the stain and leave it for about half an hour. Then rinse well. Just make sure not to rub the fabric too hard since it can wear the fabric and damage the impregnation.

  • Using a clothes brush regularly to remove dust will help keep your jacket fresh.

  • It’s unlikely that your jacket will be any cleaner if you wash it in hot water instead of warm. 30°C is often enough. Lower temperatures will prolong the lifecycle of the jacket when it comes to fibres and colors.

  • Do not use fabric softener since it impairs the technological functions of the jacket.

  • Avoid tumble-drying the jacket. The mechanical stress and the heat from the tumble-dryer wear down the colors and the fibres. Instead, let the jacket air-dry.

Textile Storage:

  • Store your textile coat or jacket on a wide wooden, plastic or padded hanger to help maintain its shape.

  • Store textile jacket in a well-ventilated, cool, dry place. Avoid hot areas, such as attics; or damp areas, such as cellars.

  • Avoid exposing direct to direct sunlight or heat for prolonged periods of time.
